Police warn of telephone scam
July 9, 2010 by admin
Police are warning residents to be aware of a scam which promises the recipient a Council Tax refund.
A resident recently received a phone call promising the refund due to incorrect Council Tax banding, and it is believed that this was an attempt to gain the person’s banking details.
When details were refused, the caller terminated the call.
Similar incidents have been reported elsewhere in the country. We would like to remind residents to under no circumstances give any private financial information to any cold caller to your home or mobile number.
In fact, KECSAG recommend that you should NEVER disclose your financial or security information to ANYONE on the phone unless you have initiated the call – even if they sound familiar. Only give your details when you are 100% certain they are who they say they are.
